Following the commencement of the trial of Nazi war criminal Adolf Eichmann in April 1961, Yale psychologist Stanley resolved to answer a thought provoking question: “Was it that Eichmann and his accomplices in the Holocaust had mutual intent, with regard to the goals of the Holocaust, or were they simply following orders?”
In July 1961, Milgram conducted the first of a series of highly controversial social psychology experiments on obedience to authority figures. His aim was to test if persons were indeed capable of following orders, even if those orders completely violated their personal beliefs, morals and convictions.
